Why e-paper

About 70-80% of the purchasing decisions are made in the store. The first 4-7 seconds in front of the products is the most critical moment, often called “the moment of truth”. Traditional paper based point-of-purchase messages is not sufficient in today’s retail environment if they are to draw customer attention and differentiate a product or brand from competitors.

Motion Display is a leading provider of motion driven point-of-purchase displays based on E-ink Corporation’s award-winning electronic ink. According to several independent consumer marketing studies, sales and brand awareness increases significantly when using Electronic Paper Displays. Motion Display's Electronic Paper Displays can show moving pictures and messages in retail environment. With a viewing angle of almost 180 degrees and with high resolution and vivid colors our displays creates a strong impact to get customer attention.

LCD displays are often limited by a cumbersome installation procedure and the need for wall power. With Motion Display's unique innovative Electronic Paper Displays, in-store communication has never been easier. Our battery powered displays with extremely low power consumption have a long lifetime. They are thin and light and are designed to be easy to handle and mount on, for instance, products, shelves and check-out counters. The displays are made of durable materials and are suitable for the tough retail environment.

    - Paper thin, light and deployed as easily as traditional POS mater
    - Allows integration with traditional static print (i.e. "hybrids")
    - Any shape - even holes
    - Brings life into printed material
    - Extremely power efficient - runs on small batteries for several months
    - No cables
    - Full color pictures
    - 180º viewing angle
    - Interactivity - button on the control unit to switch between preset animations
    - Higher contrast in bright surrounding - ideal for retail environments

How it works

A Motion Display Electronic Paper display is a flashing electronic display that combines the proven promotional effectiveness of motion and color. Ideal for retail environments where power access is limited, the displays draw very little power while attracting a lot of attention.

Although revolutionary in concept, the electronic paper technology is a straightforward fusion of chemistry, physics and electronics.

A display consists of a black and white e-paper display with a transparent color print (overlay) on top. The black and white e-paper display is made of electronic ink and an underlying layer with defined parts (segments) that can be individually controlled to switch from black to white, and vice versa, and thus create the flashing animation sequences.

The Electronic ink layer is made up of millions of tiny microcapsules, size wise about the diameter of a human hair. Each microcapsule contains positively charged white particles and negatively charged black particles suspended in a clear fluid. When a positive or negative electric field is applied, corresponding particles move to the top of the microcapsule where they become visible to the user. This makes the surface appear white or black at that spot.

How it works

What is an "ink-in-motion™" display?

An Ink-In-Motion display is a black & white Electronic Paper Display (EPD) with a transparent color print (overlay) on top.

How does the animation work?

The underlying segments on the EPD switch between black and white according to a defined pattern. A white segment highlights the semitransparent color on the overlay, giving the effect of backlighting the area as opposed to a black segment that dims the area. The change between black and white creates the animation.

Can a display have multiple animations?

Yes, the display can be programmed to show different animations. For example, by overlapping messages (words, sentences, icons) a display can be used for different campaigns, e.g SALE or Buy One Get One Free etc. To change animations, you just need to push a button on the backside of the display.

What is a hybrid display?

A hybrid display is a display where only a part of the display is animated and with the overlay covering the entire display area. The overlay on the animated area either has no print, semi-transparent print or a combination of both. On the non-animated area, the overlay has opaque print. With the right design a seamless transmission between animated and non-animated areas are created.

The color overlay

What is the color overlay?

The overlay is a printed film which is laminated on top of the e-paper display (EPD). Besides providing color to the EPD it protects the EPD against scratches and may also be used to reduce reflections from surrounding light sources (e.g. velvet surface).

How is an overlay printed?

Normally, the overlay contains two types of print: semi-transparent print and opaque print. Multiple print methods are being used depending on volume, resolution and the type of print. Typically, digital print is used for small volumes and offset print for large volumes. Screen print is commonly used to create the opaque areas of the display. To protect the print from scratches printing is done on the backside of the overlay.

How many colors can we use?

The resolution and number of colors depend on the print method. Bright colors such as light pink, yellow and light blue etc. are better suited for the animated area.

Battery Options

How long does the battery last?

TYPE THICKNESS LIFETIME NON-STOP
Rechargeable lithium battery 6 mm 4-5 months
3 AAA batteries including battery cassette 11 mm 5-7 months
 6 coin cell batteries (CR2032)  6 mm 5-7 months
 2 coin cell batteries (CR2045)  11 mm 5-7 months

The lifetime of the battery mainly depends on the complexity and speed of the animation. This is a bi-stable technology, which means there is almost no power consumption when the display is not flashing.

Can the batteries be replaced?

Yes, all the displays have replaceable batteries.

Miscellaneous

What is the operating temperature?

Operating temperature ranges from 0° to 60° Celsius.

What do I do with old displays?

The electronic paper display and control unit are to be disposed as electronics. The batteries can be easily removed and disposed as normal batteries.

What is the biggest and smallest size of a display?

TYPE SIZE

EPD (100% animated area)

Max size - Approximately 620cm2
Max length - 500mm
Min size - the size of the controller *

Larger displays can be achieved by joining

several e-papers together

Hybrid (integrated EPD)

Max size depends on printing method.

Current production setup allows a width of 850mm.

* Motion Display provides three different controller units measuring:

44x104 mm (with AAA batteries or rechargable lithium battery)

35x170 mm (with CR2032 coin cell batteries)

38x104,5 mm (with CR2045 coin cell batteries)

How to get started

What artwork format do we need?

High resolution artwork is needed for the overlay print and vectorized graphic (-ai, -eps and/or layered pdf) for the animation creation.

What is the minimal order volume?

The minimal order volume is 500 units. Smaller quantities may be accepted under special circumstances.

Case studies

Several independent studies show impressive sales increase when using Motion Display animated and flashing e-paper displays.

Prize awarded study by the Stockholm School of Economics showed a 64% sales increase of crushed tomatoes when flashing animated ink displays were used compared to static print.

Up to 79% sales increase on Bacardi Eristoff was measured in the UK during a two-month period when using animated ink displays.
